In IT parlance, "on-premise" is the classic software usage model: An SME purchases software and runs it itself on its own IT systems. The application is continuously updated in return for a software maintenance fee, but the company itself is responsible for maintaining the underlying IT infrastructure. The 'on-premise' model is contrasted with 'on-demand' use, in which the operation and maintenance of the entire IT system is taken over by an external provider.
