Three-tier architecture

The three-tier architecture (3-tier-achitecture) is an architecture that has three layers on the software side. The typical three-tier architecture consists of the following layers:

  • The presentation layer (client tier or front-end) is responsible for the representation of data, user input and the user interface.
  • The logic layer (application-server tier, business tier, middle tier or enterprise tier) has all the mechanisms for processing. This is where the application logic is united.
  • The data-server tier (or back-end) contains the Database and is responsible for saving and loading data.
