One Batch number is a unique identifier that groups together articles with the same properties – such as the same production batch or expiry date – and ensures their complete traceability.
In SAP Business One, batch management is activated at the item level: In the item master data, the setting "Manage By Batch" means that every goods movement for this item must be linked to a batch number. The serial and batch number field is therefore only active in purchasing documents, deliveries, and production orders if the item is configured accordingly. Batch management is particularly relevant in sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, or chemicals, where the FEFO principle (First Expired — First Out) dictates that batches with the earliest expiry date must be picked first. The system warns when an expired batch is selected in the sales process.
Demarcation
The batch number identifies a group of identical articles. It differs from the serial number, which is assigned to an individual, unique article. Both management methods are mutually exclusive and are chosen alternatively in the article master data.
