Pick zones are designated areas within a warehouse where the Order picking (Pick & Pack) are processed in batches. You group warehouse locations so that travel paths during picking are optimised and Stock withdrawal is accelerated.
Context
In SAP Business One, the concept of pick zones is based on activated bin location management. Bin location management allows for granular inventory management within a warehouse at the level of shelves or tiers, assigning fixed or dynamic bin locations. Building on this, the Pick & Pack process handles warehouse picking: demands from orders are reserved, summarised into pick lists, and prepared for dispatch. The pick list specifies exact bin locations, and picking is confirmed at the bin location. Pick zones group these bin locations according to logistical criteria such as frequency of access or item type, thereby shortening travel distances during picking.
Demarcation
A bin location refers to the individual storage space and thus the smallest unit of inventory management. A pick zone, on the other hand, encompasses several Storage bins to a picking area. The pick zone differs from the parent warehouse in that it remains an organisational section within the same physical warehouse and is not managed as a separate entity. Picking strategies such as FIFO or batch selection, on the other hand, refer to the order of withdrawal, not the spatial area.
