On Connector (KI) is the access through which an AI assistant integrates an external service: The user enters a connector address in their AI assistant and logs in.
Example Versino Skills
Users access the Versino Skills through a single connector address. Like the SAP B1-MCP, the Versino Skills use the Standard Model Context Protocol (MCP). The connector address is therefore the address of a service that is connected to MCP.
Registration with remote MCP servers
The MCP specification describes authorization for MCP servers that are accessible via HTTP. This version is currently in draft form, and authorization is optional for MCP implementations. The protected MCP server operates as an OAuth 2.1 resource server, with the MCP client acting as an OAuth 2.1 client in the AI assistant. An authorization server takes care of interacting with the user and issuing access tokens.
The process begins with a request without a token, to which the server responds with HTTP 401. The client then determines the authorization server and opens a login page in the browser. The user grants the permission, and the client receives an access token. The client sends this token with each subsequent request in the Authorization header, never in the address bar. The MCP server checks that the token was issued exactly for it. Permission scopes (scopes) follow the principle of least privilege. Connections over the STDIO transport do not follow this procedure; instead, the access data is retrieved from the environment.
Demarcation
The connector is the access to a service. The Context Protocol model is the open standard through which AI assistants access external tools and data sources. An access token is the proof that a MCP client can make requests to a protected MCP server after logging in.
