Patch Level PL (SAP Business One)

A Patch Level (PL) is a consecutively numbered update within a SAP Business One version, which primarily contains error corrections and legally mandated adjustments. The term originates from the English word "patch" and thus aptly describes its original purpose: to specifically fix existing software problems.

Context

Patch Levels formed the standard update cycle for all SAP Business One versions prior to 10.0 – meaning 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and 9.3. The initial releases of version 10.0 also still carried PL designations (PL00, PL01 etc.). The numbering was sequential: SAP B1 9.3 PL14 means "the 14th correction delivery for version 9.3".

New features were the exception within a patch level. Companies had to wait for the switch to the next major version to receive genuine innovations – for example, from 9.2 to 9.3. This model strictly separated stability (through patches) from innovation (through version changes).

Distinction from Feature Package (FP)

Since the end of 2020, the Feature Package has been replacing the Patch Level as the update model. The differences concern content, naming, and Strategy:

- Content: A patch level delivered bug fixes and mandatory adjustments. A feature package combines bug fixes with new functionalities in a single update.
- Naming: Patch Levels used sequential numbers (PL01, PL02). Feature Packages use a date-based schema in the format YYMM -- FP 2402 stands for the feature level of February 2024.
- Strategy: SAP has designed version 10.0 as a long-term release. Innovations are incorporated quarterly via Feature Packages, rather than requiring a new main version.

The change in terminology reflects a conscious shift in strategy. "Patch" signalled a fix, "Feature Package"emphasises the continuous increase in functionality. For existing customers on older versions, the patch level nevertheless remains relevant – for example, when assessing historical system statuses or in migration projects.
