Pioneer in equality: SAP becomes EDGE certified

Whether in a political or economic context, equality and gender diversity is a major issue today. However, instead of accusations of sexism, there is good news from SAP: SAP is the first multinational technology company to be awarded EDGE certification.

EDGE stands for Economic Dividends for Gender Equality and certifies that the company is committed to and maintains gender diversity and equality in the workplace. The assessment method reviews company data, gender equality practices, employment policies and their impact, e.g. by means of employee surveys. As part of SAP's audit process, sites in twelve countries of the software company were audited. In addition to the criteria of promotions, mentoring and flexible working models, the corporate culture is also scrutinised.

CEO McDermott sees SAP as a role model here: "This global certification represents an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to eliminate prejudice in the workplace. (...) In addition, we are once again living up to our claim to improve the processes of the global economy and the lives of people."

This aspiration has already been further promoted with the introduction of pay equity for the entire US workforce in August: where equal work was performed for less pay, this has been adjusted. In addition, 25 per cent of management positions at SAP are to be held by women by the end of 2017. According to the most recent calculation, this figure is 24.1 per cent and 32.5 per cent of the entire workforce.

The EDGE Certified Foundation, which was able to award the title to the company with co-founder Aniela Unguresan, is also delighted: "The technology industry produces the most innovative minds in the world, which is precisely why diversity is so important. Looking back, the IT community cannot boast of having recognised gender equality in the workplace as an important issue. But SAP is pioneering this in its industry, not only through its public commitment to the principle of equal opportunities, but also through the effective programmes and measures it implements in daily practice."
