An add-on is a programme connected to or integrated into an existing ERP system that supports weak or missing ERP functions.

These add-ons are developed by SAP partners or third parties and integrated into the core system to provide additional functionality and capabilities. In the recent past, there are more and more "loosely coupled add-ons". This means that the add-on can operate independently of the main system and upgrades or changes can be made without affecting the operation of the main system. This design provides better flexibility and scalability, as different add-ons can be added or removed without affecting the overall operation of the system.

Typically, a distinction is made between small - sometimes free - add-ons that add country-specific functionalities (e.g. in Germany the Elster add-on), fee-based add-ons that provide helpful additional functionalities ( Versino Financial Suite, CKS, Coresuite Country Package), and industry-specific add-ons (be.as, MariProject). These extensions are developed by SAP partners or third-party providers and integrated into the core system to provide additional functions and capabilities.
