One Unit of measurein which a material is sold.
Several sales units of measure can be defined for a material. A conversion factor enables the system to refer to the base unit of measure.
The sales unit is the unit of measure in which an item is managed and billed in the sales process. It is defined in the item master record under the "Sales data" defined. Typical units are "pcs" (pieces), "litres", "cartons", "hours" - or whatever the company understands by "sell".
Function in the system:
The defined sales unit is automatically used in all sales documents - from quotations and sales orders to deliveries. So if you sell USB sticks individually, you shouldn't accidentally have entire pallets in your offer - unless the customer is in a hurry.
Differentiation from other units of measure:
SAP Business One deliberately separates three different units:
-
Sales unit: Unit in which the customer buys.
-
Purchasing unit: Unit in which the item is purchased from the supplier.
-
Stockkeeping unit: Unit in which the item is kept in the warehouse.
This differentiation ensures flexibility - and the occasional frown when converting. But the system offers definable quantity conversions, for example: 1 carton = 10 pieces. So everything remains calculable, even if the sales department gets creative.
Use in price lists:
The price lists are always based on the defined sales unit. Prices are therefore given per "unit", "litre" or "hour" - depending on which unit is stored in the article master record. If you change the unit, you also change the pricing logic.
Manual selection of the unit in the sales document:
Despite a defined sales unit, users can also use the stockkeeping unit in the sales document - in case the sales situation does not want to adhere to the article master record. The price and quantity are then converted accordingly.
Sales unit for services:
Non-stock items such as services can (and should) also be assigned a sales unit - for example "hour", "day" or "flat rate". This means that the purely virtual item also retains a defined reference value.
