„We're very special,“ today's companies like to trumpet. Most also want their company software to reflect this individual image. The demands on ERP systems are therefore also becoming more specific. Reaching for specialised industry software (plant construction, Appliance construction, Plastic, Automotive, Medical devices, Retail, service provider, Electronics ..) seems logical after that.
An industry-wide solution is therefore not necessarily „in vogue“ at the moment. However, custom software is not essential for every company. For some companies, it can even be advantageous to implement an industry-wide system.

Good for smaller companies and your wallet
Fundamentally, it is generally small and medium-sized enterprises that can benefit from cross-industry ERP software. The systems are less complex and the functions easier to apply than specialised industry-specific software. This reduces training costs and therefore saves money. Furthermore, this „broad base“ makes integration easier, as less specific processes become more versatile, while remaining scalable. This allows the system to constantly adapt to the company, even if it is in a growth phase.
It's all in the mix
However, from a certain size, it is still common to use more specialised software. However, extra specialised software also costs money and requires a lot of explanation, i.e. training and user support. The advantage: the requirements are mapped exactly as they are needed, but this also makes them inflexible. Interesting here are the systems that are based on Standard systems but are specialised in a particular industry. This ERP software then moves somewhere in the midfield.
One example would be a system that specifically maps the functions that work in projects. Here, the requirements of these companies are mapped and they are supported by a provider who knows what the industry expects. Nevertheless, the system is still so generalised that it remains flexible. Given the dynamic nature of competition, this is an important quality of a system that would rather grow than be replaced all too soon. In addition, these systems are a fair compromise for all companies that are special but do not want or cannot afford to spend too much money on an industry-specific solution.
