In the context of SAP Business One, a title account is a higher-level account element in the chart of accounts, which does not allow any postings of its own, but summarises the balances of the active accounts subordinate to it, thus maintaining the hierarchical structure of the General ledger depicts.

In SAP Business One, the title account is primarily used for the hierarchical structuring of the chart of accounts. Consequently, it summarises a category or subcategory of G/L accounts that are arranged below this title in the chart of accounts. As a result, the title account supports the mapping of the legally required, formal organisational structures of the respective country.
The chart of accounts is organised hierarchically into main levels, title accounts and active accounts. In particular, the top level (level 1) consists exclusively of titles defined by the system, which form basic categories such as assets, liabilities or revenues. In general, levels 1 to 3 comprise these title accounts and the entire structure of the chart of accounts, while the active accounts lie below them.
An important feature is that a title account is not an active, postable account. Therefore, users cannot journal entries directly to a title account. Instead, the title account automatically aggregates the balances of all assigned, active accounts and displays them summarised at the respective structure level.
SAP Business One identifies title accounts in the „Chart of accounts“ window with the text colour blue by default. The classification of an account as a title or as an active account can also be recognised in the details of the respective G/L account.
The title structure is absolutely relevant for the creation of financial reports such as balance sheets or profit and loss statements. When users generate such reports, title accounts summarise the balances of the assigned G/L accounts and display them at the corresponding structure level in the report. This ensures that the report layout and chart of accounts structure remain consistent.
A title account differs from an active account in that it cannot be posted to directly. Active accounts are displayed in black or green in the chart of accounts, while title accounts appear in blue. In addition, active accounts are used for the direct entry of journal entries, whereas title accounts merely summarise the balances of these active accounts and are used as a structuring element.
