DATEV - Company formation and its causes

The company DATEV - short for data processing - was founded in Nuremberg in 1966. Around 65 Tax agent (similar to tax consultants) have decided with the foundation of the company to now use software for data collection and Accounting by means of EDP.

This decision was preceded by a shortage of accountants and tax advisors in the 1960s. At the same time, however, the German economy was growing and every company wanted (or needed) to at least have its accounts audited or prepared by a tax office. With the introduction of the new VAT system (as we know it today), this was anything but a routine endeavour.

The first steps

To make the data processable, DATEV first „punched“ it onto punch cards and then read it in themselves. There, it was processed and the evaluation was sent back to the customers. From the 1970s onwards, however, a data centre grew – with technological progress – in which the company processed „electronic“ data via remote data transmission lines (similar to the internet).
